Though tef is relatively less affected by drought as compared to other cereal crops, considerable yield loss is accounted by drought, up to 40%. There is no ample genetic variability towards drought resistance in tef germplasm. The need to broaden tef germplasm through conventional crossing with closely related wild species is required. This work clearly indicated the use of wild Eragrostis pilosa in tef genetic improvement program for developing genotypes that are resistant to drought. Therefore the book provides very crucial information for researchers involved in tef breeding program.
Tef (Eragrostis tef Zucc. Trotter) is a cereal endemic to Ethiopia that is gaining international importance. It is emerging as a health crop of high nutritional value after the recognition that the grain is gluten free and suited to gluten intolerant people. It is gaining attention as a forage crop with diverse ecological adaptation. Tef straw is a more nutritious feed relative to other cereal crop residues. It is preferentially fed to selected livestock in Ethiopia. Readily available information on Tef is limited despite the forgoing benefits. This is especially the case regarding Tef straw as feed. This book reviews the importance and improvement work on Tef as human food, Tef forage and straw as animal feed. Major emphasis is on the straw in terms of availability as feed, feeding value, limitations and options to improve its utilization and feeding value. Implications of recent attention on Tef are also reviewed and recommendations for future action made. This book is believed to contribute to satisfying the ever growing urge for assembled information on Tef and provoke thoughts and action towards improvement and tapping of the potential behind this crop.
This book will help to improve cereal productivity in general and tef production in particular in small and large scale farms. It explains about the performance of Tef [Eragrostis Tef (Zucc.) Trotte] under different water levels and N-P fertilizer rates in Northern Ethiopia. It includes the agronomic performance of Tef by applying water and N-P fertilizer rate of Grain yield, aboveground dry biomass, Harvest index, Lodging %, Water use efficiency, Partial budget analysis and yield component parameters. It also provided additional information about the Ethiopian Tef production system and other research results which help as literature to university lecturers and students, researchers and other people who are increased to work in agriculture sector.
The majority of (86%) the farmers in the study area are using local varieties of tef; namely, Sergenga, Daboo and Manga. The popular improved tef variety used by the farmers is Dz-01-354. The dominance of one variety of tef is both interesting and worrying. Dz-01-354 is very good variety with many desirable attributes and is widely accepted. The extension service was by far the most popular means of disseminating technical information about improved varieties of tef to farmers in this area. In the experiment, as temperature causes variation in germination percentage (rate) and seedling emergence rate and percent, there is also a great variation among farmers having a germination capacity in the same temperature level.
Tef (Eragrostics tef (Zucc.), Trotter: Poaceae) is a staple food crop of Ethiopia where it is originated and diversified. Red tef worm (M. ignicollis) is a serious pest of tef grown on black soils. Hence this work emphasized on the evaluation of potential of entomopathogenic fungi and insect growth regulators against Red Tef Worm. All tested Metarhizium anisopliea and Beuveria bassiana isolates were caused infection on third instar larvae of Red Tef Worm and able to cause delayed effect on the next stage.However, isolate MM has caused the highest mortality than others.Lufenuron and teflubenzuron were also caused mortality after affecting the developmental stage of RTW larvae and inhibit egg hatch ability. In general, both MM isolate at 1x109spores/ml and lufenuron (40g a.i./ha) were found to be effective and potency against 3rd instar larvae of RTW under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Therefore, since these agents are safe to the environment and other beneficial organisms, they are recommended for the tef growing farmers and researchers to develop intgerated pest management of the insect.

Climate variability and associated risks in the Central Rift Valley (CRV) of Ethiopia put farmers under fragile situations. Although tef (Eragrostis tef) is an important cereal crop in Ethiopia, crop responses to water studies are scanty. Thus, ETc and Kc of three tef varieties determined and long-term climatic conditions of three tef growing areas viz. Alemtena, Debre Zeit and Melkassa analyzed. Seasonal ETc 289.5, 378.5 and 387mm, recorded for DZ-Cr-37, DZ-01-196 and DZ-01-354, respectively. The pooled Kc values were 0.3, 1.0, 1.2 and 0.7 for initial, development, mid-season and late-season stages, respectively. The studied sites receive rainfall from March to May and from June to September which contributes 18-32% and 66-73% to the annual rainfall, respectively. The mean length of the growing period extends from 98-114 and is highly variable. The seasonal effective rainfall failed to meet the ETc of 100 days maturity tef varieties in 40-43% of the seasons at Alemtena and Melkassa. It was concluded that analysis of long-term climate data using crop specific coefficients would help to provide better advice in designing appropriate crop management practices and to minimize risk.
