The seasonal production of mango is an opportunity for the utilization of the fruit and minimizing post-harvest loss, particularly in developing countries. The influence of processing on some quality attributes of mango fruit leather developed from two fruit varieties namely, Keitt (local mango) and Tommy Atkins (export standard mango) was studied in Ethiopia. The research experiment was conducted using an electrical oven and convective hot air dryer to determine required minimum drying time to puree load. The major factors considered to have an effect on the fruit leather quality were drying temperature, puree load and mango variety. The developed mango fruit leather underwent physico-chemical,textural, Microbiological and sensory analysis. The data obtained was analyzed using SPSS version 17 statistical software. The project covered the process and analysis of mango fruit leather and its development at a laboratory scale. Additionally, an economical feasibility study was conducted and recommendations made. This book will be an asset for those interested in the effect of fruit processing on product quality and developing technology at an industrial level.
Trees subjected to the different defoliation and deblossoming levels had a positive effect on vegetative physiology, reproductive growth, and yield and fruit quality of guava (Psidium guajava L.) cv. Gola. Most of the characteristics gave best results by the application of 50% deblossoming for tree vigour and fruit quality of guava. Trees subjected to 50% deblossoming exhibited higher fruit length, diameter and size in the winter than other treatments. Deblossoming alone improves fruit quality in a better way than with defoliation. 50% deblossoming level resulted in increased fruit set (53% higher), fruit growth & Yield (24.7% more in terms of weight) in winter crop as compared to summer crop. Firmness, Organoleptic characteristics, TSS and reducing sugars were reflected maximum results for winter crop as compared to summer crop. In conclusion, defoliation and deblossoming had a significant impact on the vegetative and reproductive growth of guava cv. ‘Gola’. The results suggested that the defoliation has negative impact on the reproductive growth of guava and deblossoming can be used effectively without defoliation to encourage the winter crop.
This book is covering the influence of jatropha oil cakes as concentrated organic manure on vegetable crop green chillies. Organic materials such as vermicompost, poultry manure, oilcakes,, green manures and crop residues can substitute inorganic fertilizers to maintain productivity and environmental quality. Oil cakes are concentrated organic manures. After the oil is extracted from oil seeds, the remaining solid portion is dried as cake and as organic manure. Jatropha cake one of the non edible oil cake serve as a good source of organic manure especially for horticultural crops, as these contain high amount of plant nutrients. The jatropha oil cake cannot be used as animal feed, because of its toxic principles or antifactors and hence can be used as organic manure. Combined application of organic and inorganics manures resulted better crop growth and quality parameters in green chillies. Remarkably improvement in soil health (fertility) was also observed. Therefore, application of 75 per cent jatropha oil cake and 25 per cent RDF with three per cent foliar spray of panchagavya was found to be the best suited management practice for green chillies.

Ripened semi-preserved anchovies are prepared from fish of the Engraulis encrasicholus (L) species by a process of salting and ripening. This process goes back to ancient times and it is a common traditional in some Mediterranean countries. This study was carried out to compare the rates of spoilage and keeping quality of the ripened salted anchovies packed as a whole fish in salt and fillets in olive oil during shelf life period “marketing” at different storage temperatures of (8+2oC and 22+5oC). The shelf life of such product is limited since, the enzymatic activity is not suppressed when the ripening process is completed but continues during marketing. It is therefore necessary; recommended to store this product at refrigeration temperature and under such conditions the products keep very well. Since, at the elevated temperature, the proteolytic enzymes may breakdown the anchovy flesh specially anchovies preserved in oil to the point of liquefaction. Besides may increase of histamine production and accumulation.
Since the first case of HIV in Kenya was diagnosed in early 1980, the control of HIV and AIDS remains a major challenge in Kenya. High prevalence of HIV with regional variations, low levels of HIV testing, HIV discordance within couple relationships and concurrent epidemics of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) make the management of the HIV epidemic difficult and complex. Couples Voluntary HIV Counseling and Testing (CVCT) services have increasingly been accepted as an effective public health tool for preventing new HIV infections particularly within HIV discordant couples. Over the past three years, Ministry of Public Health and Sanita-tion(MOPHS) through Provincial AIDS and STI Coordinating office(PASCO) has embarked on scaling up HIV counseling and testing and introduced CVCT services. Despite using various innovative health promotion techniques involving community outreaches, mass media and com-munity peer educators, the uptake of the services is low. This study aimed at investigating and analyzing the influence of social economic factors on the uptake of CVCT services in Meru Mu-nicipality. The target population was 3276 married people aged 18-49 years.
A sustainable improvement in jute productivity under less favourable environment can only be achieved with a constant flow of new genetic materials. The existing variability for constraints, like insect-pest and diseases, poor soil fertility, water stress, fiber quality, photo-insensivity etc. is a serious issue that needs to be addressed . It is evident that all the tissue culture techniques play a vital role in the enrichment of genetic variability. Among the phytohormone combination, MS+ 2 mg/l BAP + 0.5 mg/l IAA showed the highest shoot regeneration (60.66%). The variety CVE-3 response better than O-72 towards shoot regeneration at different pH level. Among the sucrose concentration 3% (30mg/l) showed the highest shoot regeneration (87.49%). Among the different concentration of vitamins x2 times (3.0mg/l) showed the highest shoot regeneration. Using different concentration of surfactant 0.1% surfactant showed the highest shoot regeneration (91.663%). In the NaCl experiment, among the three varieties CVE-3 was found highly responsive to shoot regeneration (97.22%) and 0.125, 0.25 and 0.50 (%) NaCl shows the better responsive to shoot regeneration.

There are a number of factors that affect negatively the quality of education children receive. These are related to four players: the teachers, the pupils, the communities from where the children come and the Government. Some of the factors are beyond the control of teachers – e.g. home factors, Government factors that hinge on policy. However, there are some factors for which the teachers have control and where they can do something – administration, teacher and pupils factors as well as classroom factors. Classroom interaction between the teachers and the pupils has the biggest influence on the performance of the pupils. Some of the hindrances to good pupil performance include lack of pupil requisites like learning and teaching materials, desks, difficulties in applying appropriately the teaching methods in, corporal and other forms of punishment, teachers’ lack of motivation due to poor working conditions, absenteeism of both teachers and pupils. Outside the classroom the biggest factor that affect the pupils is the house chores. You can read these and many more in this book. This book is a must for all those that have a heart to improve children's quality of education.
